ATTENTION: Critical Drought Declared Across Massachusetts

As many of you are aware, Massachusetts has received an unprecedented low amount of precipitation over the last three months. As of November 19th, Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary (EEA), Rebecca Tepper, has declared the Western, Connecticut River Valley and the Southeast Regions to a Level 3 - Critical Drought. A Level 3 - Critical Drought persists in the Central and Northeast Regions.

These exceptionally dry conditions have led to low streamflows raising concerns for migratory fish and other aquatic species, decrease in water levels across multiple reservoirs in the state and an increase in wildfire occurrences and intensity.

Below are recommendations for residents living within Level 3 Drought region:

  • Minimize overall water use for example taking shorter showers, running dishwashers or washing machines only on a full load, washing personal vehicles, etc.

  • Fix any toilet or faucet leaks.

  • Follow state water conservation actions and any local water use restrictions.

  • Refrain from outdoor cooking and heating. Sparks and embers from chimineas or grills can easily ignite dry vegetation.

  • Use caution with leaf blowers, lawnmowers or other power equipment. Hot engines, sparks and spilled gasoline can ignite dry grass or leaves.

  • Avoid any fire-related activity i.e. campfires, burning natural yard waste debris, off-roading, use of fireworks, etc.

  • Never toss cigarette butts, matches or other smoking materials over the edge of a balcony or toss them in dry vegetation or debris on the side of a road.

Please pay attention to any alerts issued by the Fire/Police Department, Tyngsborough Water District, Dracut Water District or the Board of Health.
